A multilingual and versatile jazz and world music vocalist, Julie Slim brings forth the cultural influences that shape her life in her musical project, RendezVous, a quintet with whom she won an Honorary Merit Award in 2017 from the International Songwriting Competition for her original song, Sarabande de Solitude (Shawn Ellison/Julie Slim). She was also featured in the 2017 Songwriters Showcase at SXSW. Julie Slim & RendezVous have held residencies at The Skylark Lounge and the premier jazz venue, Parker Jazz Club in Austin TX. Growing up in Beirut, Lebanon, Julie fell in love with the theatre in her teenage years, and after nurturing her second love for languages in college (BA Speech/Language Pathology, MA Linguistics), she immersed herself in musical theatre in Allentown PA, playing a variety of roles like Hodel (Fiddler on The Roof), Pitti Sing (The Mikado), Princess Ababu (Kismet), culminating in Austin with a B. Iden Payne award nomination for Lead Actress for her role in the original children's show, Deep In The Heart of Texas (dir. Alice Carnes). Julie transitioned from the musical theatre world to the jazz world in 2001 as a lead jazz vocalist with the Austin Jazz Workshop performing Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Gershwin and Hoagie Carmichael as well as teaching clinics to elementary students on these fine composers. Since 2008, Julie has participated as a soloist with Bereket, UT Middle Eastern Ensemble, singing in Arabic, Turkish, Armenian and Farsi, as well as directing the Arabic choir. With RendezVous, Julie combines her experience as an actor, linguist and improvisor to create a fun, yet informative show that takes the listener on a trip around the world. Upon an invitation by UT OLLI LAMP in February 2017 Julie enjoyed giving a seminar at The University of Texas on the topic of love through the music of Edith Piaf, titled Hymn To Love, accompanied by her pianist and songwriting collaborator, Shawn Ellison. Julie Slim has released three albums with RendezVous, available online on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music and other music websites. Julie is currently working on her next album with RendezVous, which will be multilingual and will feature original songs.
