I’m Andrew Ley, a graphic designer who works with small businesses and charities who are passionate about what they do. During my career I’ve worked for and with a variety of brands, from local government bodies to multinational corporations. Time and again I would see the same issue crop up, and it would frustrate me. Despite being great at what they did, these places struggled to consistently communicate their greatness to their customers. I started Andrew Ley Graphic Design to address this, by helping great businesses like yours to fully realise and demonstrate their value. Using a mixture of strategy, coaching and design I lead you on a journey that helps you understand how and why people choose your business over another. I then produce a new brand that visually represents your unique offering to your customers. My branding process has been designed to involve you as closely as possible at every stage. This helps you to gain a fuller understanding of the decisions we make and how they relate to your business, and helps me to make sure the final product is as relevant to you as possible.

uniE621 Grecian Heating and Electrical Branding
A local firm specialising in the installation and maintenance of heating systems, James from Grecian Heating and Electrical approached me when he was looking for a new brand to accompany the expansion of his business. The company had been operating as Grecian Gas Services for a number of years, but James had since qualified to work on electrical heating systems as well, and was also looking to move into the green and renewable energy market. After chatting with James it became clear to me that he prided himself on his quality of workmanship and customer service. He didn't just fix people's heating; he provided them with warmth - both literally, and emotionally. The new branding uses a warm orange colour, along with a simple bold type logo, that feels trustworthy and friendly. The use of a damask pattern softens the branding, as well as echoing traditional soft furnishings and wallpapers used in homes. These elements are carried across a range of items Grecian's customers will interact with, from the website to the invoices, creating a sense of consistency and familiarity. #logo #branding #brand #graphicdesigner #graphicdesign #localbusiness
    uniE621 TRUST School Branding
Marland School is a specialist education provider for boys with emotional, behavioural and social difficulties. The Headmaster approached me to talk about the possibility of rebranding the school. They were setting up a second site in the nearby town of Barnstaple, and wanted to look at moving away from the location specific name of the school. The proposal I created revolves around the school’s ethos of building trust between the staff and students – this is such a central tenet to what they do that the word ‘Trust’ seemed like an obvious choice for their name. The logo represents this two-way flow of trust with its symmetry: the logo reads the same forwards and backwards. I felt it was important for the students to have a sense of ownership over the school’s brand. Therefore the logo can also act as a container for photography and artwork created by the students. This feature of the logo adds an extra layer to the trust element. Student’s have the opportunity to see their work featured in the school’s branding, but have to take responsibility for that work being appropriate for the public. #logo #branding #brand #graphicdesigner #graphicdesign #localbusiness
    uniE621 Royal Marines 350 Logo
On October 28th 2014 the Royal Marines celebrated their 350th anniversary. To commemorate this the Navy wished to produce a special logo that could be used to tie together all the celebratory events taking place throughout the year. The chosen logo had to be iconic, simple and versatile for a wide range of uses, but it also needed to co-exist with the well established branding the Royal Navy and Royal Marines already had in place. I was asked to take the design lead and, after my initial logo proposal was accepted, liaised with key stakeholders across the Royal Navy to produce the finished product. The final logo ties the Royal Marines’ proud history with its current-day role. The two Marines stand back-to-back; reflecting the special bond between all Marines past and present. Whilst the subtle Commando Dagger between them reflects the Royal Marines’ role as the UK’s specialist commando force. The logo was launched at the tail-end of 2013, and was a prominent feature at a large number of special events held throughout the anniversary year. #logo #branding #brand #graphicdesigner #graphicdesign #localbusiness
uniE621 South West Mother and Baby Show Branding
The Problem The South West Mother and Baby Show is an event that brings together local businesses specialising in products and services for parents of young children. Jo and Emily, the founders and organisers, came to see me when they had the initial idea to run the event. They needed a brand that would present a professional image during their outreach to potential exhibitors and sponsors. Finally, as they were funding the event themselves and no income had been generated at this point, they wanted the logo produced quickly and with a tight budget. The Solution During a meeting with Jo and Emily I produced a few preliminary sketches for their logo. One of the ideas was a traditional-style pram with the angle between the hood and the base forming an arrow pointing south-west. It was this logo we chose to develop further. The final logo features this pram icon housed in a simple circular shape, with the placement of the text creating either a horizontal or vertical format. The elements can also be used independently—with the circular pram icon being ideal for use as a social media avatar. The fresh green and soft purple colour palette create a calm and gentle feeling that is entirely appropriate for this event, whilst avoiding the soft pink and baby-blue colours used so often in this market. This brand allowed Jo and Emily to quickly create consistently branded websites, marketing materials and social media channels. The profesional image created helped them to attract a number of sponsors and exhibitors to make their event a success. #logo #branding #brand #graphicdesigner #graphicdesign #localbusiness
    uniE621 Halcyon Biomedical Branding
Halcyon Biomedical creates innovative medical technologies that help to examine and analyse blood. They specialise in working with ‘microfluidics’ to passively filter and separate blood into its component parts for analysis. They required a new logo that represented the technology they use in an accessible manner. The chosen logo also needed to be suitable for use on a variety of unusual applications such as the medical devices the company produces. My proposal takes a very simple and stylised approach, creating a simple three-line logo to represent the flow of blood through the passive filters that Halcyon produce. The simplicity of the logo and wordmark make it suitable for a wide number of applications on all manner of materials; from being embossed onto the small medical components the company produces to being embroidered on lab coats. Restricting the branding to a monotone black and grey palette creates a serious and confident tone, allowing Halcyon to establish a sense of trust with its target audience of medical professionals. uniE621 Coldharbour Mill Branding
Coldharbour Mill Museum is a 200 year old woolen mill, with original machinery still powered by both water and steam. In 2015 they were going through the process of improving the mill's facilities, transforming the site into a professional museum and tourist attraction. I was asked to create a new brand that would allow Coldharbour Mill to position itself as a genuine tourist attraction and site of interest to potential visitors - whilst still being simple enough that the musuem's staff and volunteer's could easily make use of it. Using the mill's original burgundy paintwork as inspiration I created a colour palette consisting of traditional heritage colours, with bold modern couterparts - comunicating the history and energy of the mill itself. The simple logo makes use of the mill's iconic chimney; a prominent local landmark. Finally the use of Gill Sans as a typeface harks back to britain's industrial heyday - and is also preinstalled on Windows and Mac, meaning the mill's staff and volunteers already have acces to it. With these elements working together, Coldharbour Mill now has a strong brand image that pays homage to the past, whilst looking toward a bright future. #logo #branding #rebrand #graphicdesigner #graphicdesign #museum #charity
