Celia Luz originates from Brooklyn, NY and grew up around Coney Island. She was introduced to art at a young age by her father, an abstract painter. She was heavily influenced by Marvel comic books and attended The School of Visual Arts in NYC, where she majored in Cartooning/Illustration. Though she didn’t pursue comic art, Celia was moved by the first painting class she ever took. This was the beginning of a 10 year transition that would lead to her becoming a mixed media artist.
In 2003, Celia left NYC to start a new personal and artistic journey in Santa Fe. As freeing as New Mexico was, personal setbacks brought on a five year creative block. To work through it, she traded her brushes for a camera. She has since been a self taught photographer, applying what she knows about storytelling, illustration and painting to her creative process; one she calls “painting with photos”.
Celia is currently based in Santa Fe. She has permanent installations at local restaurants, including Beestro, as well as shows with hotels and galleries, including The Eldorado and The Peters Projects.
A brief statement:
When I photograph, I access my inner world and gently find subject matter that responds to my emotional state. I often begin working each image by replacing the original color palette with colors that express my mood. I then add various textures to shift towards a painterly aesthetic and print on either paper or canvas. I find closure with my pieces through movement in acrylic paint as the elements of my vision and expression come together.
