I wish you had a bully.
Bullying is a pretty serious problem in modern society, at least as social media had informed all of us. Person A picks on person B. 'Why?', we speculate. We are great speculators. The power to grab information from all over the world gives us a vast and sometimes inaccurate library to speculate the 'why?'.
Some might get picked on at home. Others might just need to feel powerful. Some might do it out of boredom. A famous pop culture meme would have us believe 'some men just want to watch the world burn'. 'Why?' is a luxury, though. 'Why?' can only grow if it's had time to be watered, by idle minds, pondering their time away.
Enough of the 'why?'. How do we take care of it? Currently we seem to be shining as many lights on it as possible, in an effort to shame it with public exposure. But bullying is not like a politican with a closet full of skeletons. Bullying doesn't really care if you see it, or shame it. It will still happen.
Stand up to the bully. Fight back, get in their way, let them know that they won't find a victim where they're looking without finding a guard, a defender, a friend. Don't make victims out of everyone by feeding 'why?' and shining lights at the big scary monster. Stand against it. Fight it.
I wish you had a bully.
I see you beat yourself up. You knock yourself down and keep kicking. Every little mistake is an excuse. Sometimes you don't even need an excuse; you just do it to for the sake of doing it.
I see you get beaten up by yourself. You take it; you don't fight back; how can you?
I wish you had a bully. I can stand in between you and a bully. I can fight the bully. I can intercept their swings, I can talk back at their insults; fuck, I can file litigation against them in this day and age. I can drive them off when they see it's too hard or not worth the effort to hurt my friend.
But I can't defend you against yourself, no matter how much I wish I could. All I can do is kind of sit there and shed light on it, and wonder why.
