I was a classically trained pianist who achieved a Grade 7 with distinction at age 12. I then went to a different school with a different teacher who was horrible to her students and I left class, giving up all piano until 2 years later. I could barely read sheet music and was so frustrated that I was on the cusp of giving up altogether until something amazing happened. Any creative sonical artist will tell you that to be creative in music you must have an ear for it. Most of the time classical training is about the clinically correct precise articulation of a piece that somebody has written. It has very little to do with creativity and expression.
