Not my earliest piece - but the one that got me noticed. First performed at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1964 by children from Huntingdonshire conducted bt Eric Roseberry it led to orchestral, operatic and chamber commissions. This performmance is by the Finchley Childrens Music Group, conducted by John Andrews The poems are by Ted Hughes. Obviously I was excited by the new ideas on music for children stirred by Max Davies at Cirencester in the late 50s (where I u sed to visit him from Oxford) but I wanted to write something less hieratic and solemn. and more tunefully entertaining. I believe there are several now well known names lurking amongst the children in this performance. #audio #Serious Music for Children
