Hayley Wright is a 27 year-old freelance fashion illustrator and skate deck designer, currently based out of Edmonton, Alberta.
Her artwork has appeared in many local publications, including Vancouver’s Space|Time Magazine, Edmonton’s ModCity Magazine, the Edmonton Journal, and most recently, the Winter 2015 issue of FASHION Magazine. She has worked alongside many well-known companies, including La Maison Simons, FIDO Mobile, and VICE Media.
Hayley’s artwork fights to rejuvenate the interest in fashion illustration. Inspired by captivating editorials and creative photography, she translates these images into whimsical yet haunting illustrations. Delicate subject matter is juxtaposed by a grave atmosphere, resulting in a contrast that is unique to her work.
Created using graphite pencil, fine ink pens, and watercolour paints, Hayley’s illustrations are not entirely gentle as they strike the balance between delightful and despairing.
In June of 2016, Hayley embarked on an exciting new project: designing custom skateboard and longboard decks. This was a completely new area of discovery for her and, what started out as just one deck for fun, quickly became an obsession. Using wood-burning, spray painting, and a terrifying concoction of hazardous materials, Hayley’s decks bring a unique flavour to the skateboarding industry, creating designs and techniques that put a modern spin on skateboard graphics. To help fund her latest project, Hayley successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign. Over the course of 30 days, 25 beautiful friends and strangers across the globe reached out to help, exceeding her funding goal by 135%!
After the success of the Kickstarter campaign, Hayley grabbed the attention of local media, including CBC Radio, Global News, and CTV News. The Skateboard Collective was born and the demand continues to grow! Hayley had never expected her art career would have taken such a turn, but she couldn’t have imagined a better outlet for her creativity. Today, Hayley is currently exploring the art of woodworking, and experimenting with cutting her own longboards.
