Leo Alexander is a songwriter/singer based in NC who was born Darius McKiver. He got his start in 2007 after his father’s passing and has been writing and singing ever since. Combining his inspirational upbringings of 90’s r&b artists like Brandy, Usher, and Ginuwine with his love and appreciation of new age alternative r&b artists like DΔWN (Dawn Richard), Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, and Janelle Monae, Leo has created a sound in which he calls “Neon Gumbo” – r&b underlining’s blended with multiple elements of genres like pop, EDM, alternative, hip hop, and dance just to name a few. Since 2007 Leo has released 10 different projects but felt he didn’t find his sound until 2013. “Up until my EP LeMar I was making music that I thought was popular. At some point I had a realization where I had to start writing things that meant so much more to me than just a melody. Then with the release of LeMar, Speak For Itself: Vol. II, and Rehab, I realized how many more layers there were to my artistry,” he reflects on his career’s progression. In September of 2015 Leo released his debut album Zodiac, a project that he describes as the opening chapter to an autobiography. The album has spawned 3 sonically different singles: the space electronic “OPERATION Z”; the r&b dreamlike “Eyes Wide Open”; and the hypersexual hip hop driven “Tell Me”. He followed up in February of 2016 with an EP entitled One Hell of a Ride which he calls the beautiful remains of an ugly scar. The next move for him is collaborating with different artists and producers all across the music spectrum. He’s also in the works of a follow up EP called One Hell of a Ride: ROSE due later in the year.
