An elusive Full-Stack Developer who can get from a prototype to full MVP (minimum viable product). Full-stack die-hards(like myself) would consider a full-stack developer to have specialized knowledge in all stages of software development. This forces me into a corner where I have to learn everything. Thus, as a full-stack developer I am proficient, if not fluent, in: Server/Hosting (a) Devops: Apache, shell scripting, version control systems Back End: Apart from knowing the language of choice – in my case PHP and its multitude of frameworks – I had to be familiar with: NodeJS for compiling JS, CSS, and other assets into statically hostable ones Good API design Cronjobs and background jobs Relational and non-relational databases Front end: A comprehensive overview of what’s needed for a healthy front end workflow these days which includes the following: How to sketch out a prototype of an application before converting it into a usable format like HTML and CSS Frameworks like VueJS, React, Angular, Polymer and JQuery (ofcourse) Tools like Photoshop and Illustrator Mobile: Finally, there’s mobile to consider. With web-view on both IOS and Android becoming more and more performant, and the advent of PWAs , native apps are losing their charm because of the complex process of developing them. Therby I had to be familiar with either PWAs, or a full on web-view like Cordova and Phonegap implementation to get a good “client app”. So after all this, is it worth it? First of all, it should be noted that very few full stack developers are this full stack (simply because it’s not possible to pay good attention to them all) Secondly, it makes me capable of understanding what goes into a project and which ones of these technologies a project actually needs. It lets me spread my wings, test out different technologies. Thus I consider this as a priceless skill. After all, I am a self-taught 22-year-old Full-Stack Developer (a) Designer and Web Developer based in India.
