Spotlight on Clara Luzia

We could go on an on here reviewing the well accomplished Austrian singer-songwriter Clara Luzia. But with 5 studio album releases all developing in sound and feeling it’s not an easy job to offer up a short yet wholesome review. Though we’ll give it a go as she’s well worth a listen no matter which track you go for.

Occasionally performing as a solo artist, a trio and a quartet for her more orchestral sounds, Clara is often found touring across Austria and mainland Europe, making a big name for herself and headlining in some great venues, however she is still relatively an unknown in the UK and US. That’s why we’re happy to be introducing her now and it’s a pleasure to have her on Clowdy.

You’ll find an evolving blend of bittersweet, mellow folk that started with a laid back and smooth vibe. Alot of her music reflects heavily on the struggle in relationships and coping with being alone. But it comes out in an accepting, hands-on-the-table kind of way with an image of days passing by to the rhythm of a more cheerful beat. Here’s a good example from her debut album “Railroad tracks” back in 2006 with “Fine”.

Moving forward to her latest album ” We are fish” you’ll hear a very different sound. Something about the strings and keys make it a lot more dramatic and haunting. The tracks have more than just melancholy they have a burning fire and something you can scream. Something more aggressive and appealing to the larger venues with heavy electrics and powerful percussion. We most enjoyed the title track itself, “We are Fish”, for its explosive crescendo which is preceded by distant wails from the violins causing a really brooding and captivating calm before the storm feel.

Some other notable mentions include her winning the prestigious Austrian music award, Amadeus, being featured in several Austrian movies as well as the British documentary “Last shop standing” and providing the title track “Sinnerman” for the internationally acclaimed drama “The Dark Valley”. She’s been making a few appearances in UK venues per year so keep track of her upcoming performances and more here. Get listening to some more of her tracks on her Clowdy profile here. We particularly recommend one of our Staff Picks “The Waving Ones“.
