Claude John was looking for an illustrator to bring to life a new line of funny socks aimed at the construction industry. After posting his brief on Twine, he found the perfect illustrator for the job, UK graphic design student Peter Coates.
Claude’s recently started a sock company, and had a pretty good idea of what he wanted from his illustrator:
“I’ve just started a small sock company and required an artist. The main clientele for the socks will be builders/construction workers, so I required conceptual illustrations of workers on the sock. For instance maybe a window on the ankle with someone climbing up while another falling. The main thing is that I wanted the socks to be both funny and attractive to wear.”

We spoke to illustrator Peter Coates about himself and the work he did for Claude:
“My name’s Peter Coates, I’m from the UK and I’m currently finishing my university course in Graphic Design. I love to draw in my free time and alongside aspiring to become a freelance illustrator, I am also hoping to create a graphic novel one day.
The project simply sounded like it fitted with my skills where cartoony illustrations were required. Claude was a pleasure to work with and I think working for him has helped me expand my portfolio with a little more variety. This was my first time using Twine to find paid work as an illustrator and it has helped me find my first paid design job overall. I therefore regard Twine very highly for that and when I finish college, I hope to make more use of it in the future!”
