My name is Brandie Zaspel and I am an illustrator hailing from the Twin Cities. My work focuses on the use of pattern and texture while paying homage to the arts and crafts that originally fueled my love of art. When creating each piece, I often sketch and ink traditionally and finish digitally to ensure that my personal fingerprint is on each piece while allowing for freedom of experimentation with color and texture. Lately, I have been experimenting with more traditional methods including pen and ink, watercolor, and linocut printmaking. I use limited color palettes with busy compositions to create a comfortable balance with each finished piece. My favorite subjects of illustration include, but are not limited to, portraiture, pop culture icons, anything vintage, cute animals, nature, architecture, and fashion.
I am very interested in textile design, children’s book illustration, editorial illustration, marketing and product design, concept illustration, and gif creation. At the end of the day, anything that allows me to illustrate and create is incredibly fulfilling.
I hold a BFA in illustration with a teaching artist minor from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
