Born in Manchester and raised in Wigan, T.E. Yates is very much a Lancashire musician and artist. Known as one of Manchester's more unusual performers, Yates tends to wield his surreal drawings and paintings amongst a myriad of musical instruments. In addition to performing his own material, Yates is a member of Victorian Dad, having joined the band in 2007. Victorian Dad's debut album 'The Thin Thread' was initially released in 2013. As a member of Victorian Dad, Yates' main roles are backing vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar and harmonica but occasionally extend to percussion, ukulele, banjo and musical saw. Yates' debut release, the double A side 'Two Sides Of T.E. Yates', was issued in November 2012 on Debt Records. Following the release of the single, T.E. Yates has been selected for airplay on BBC radio, both local (BBC Radio Manchester) and national (BBC Radio 6 Music), by Michelle Hussey and Tom Robinson respectively. After almost four years in the making, Possessed EP was released in December 2013. Produced by Debt Records' very own Biff Roxby, the record features Yates performing a variety of instruments and also includes the talents of his fellow Victorian Dad band mates in addition to Debt label mates Honeyfeet and Bedlam Six. Ottersgear's Mikey Kenney also plays fiddle on the record. He is involved with local record label Debt Records and can regularly be found playing various musical instruments both as a solo act and with other bands.
I am Rehana Nagdee, a visual artist, designer and photographer. I studied at the University of Central Lancashire, having done two years of a degree in Fine Art, and one year in graphic design. I also studied at North Trafford College and I have a BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design. There are two projects I am currently working on. Project one consists of abstract and hard edge paintings that take on an Op Art and psychedelic look. Project two consists of collages, combining images and words that asks questions about the different aspects of the society we live in today. Project One: The roots of my work begin with my interest in human perception and psychology. I am fascinated in the human senses, especially in exploring the sense of vision and making work that is visually stimulating or illusive like that of optical illusions due to the impact it has on affecting vision. I am heavily influenced by nature, geometry and architecture by the form of lines that exist within them, such as the waves in the sea or the branches of a tree, the order and arrangement of simple shapes and lines to create pattern in geometry and the construction and build of classical architecture. I also like the growth and progression of their existence. The surface of my work is concentrated on line, movement, pattern and colour. The process of creating pattern starts with a collection of experiments of line manipulation. I produce a series of lines in transition, always starting with a single line and observing the ways in which it can turn, move or bend. I achieve pattern through repetition of each line. I like the idea of taking something simple and making it more interesting. I use colour to bring ‘life’ into ones surroundings and to feel a sense of emotion as well as stimulating vision. Project Two: My interest in human perception and psychology continues in this project, mainly focusing on thought processes. This work contains photos and text taken from mainstream media of todays magazines. The images and phrases combined focuses on asking questions and raising awareness, about the challenges we face of the different issues in todays society, some of which are personal to me. I aim to provoke emotional reactions and I am interested in the viewers interpretations in response to this work. It is also in some ways a path of self discovery. Like a story line, each piece of work is like a thought process branching off into different ideas and themes. Some of the issues presented are identity/image, contentment and relationships, aspiration and consumerism. I also aim to tackle stereotypes and thinking in extreme opposites. I also have a keen interest in photography which consist of unusual, abstract and natural forms.
