"I did my first open mic when I was about 18. It was at the Wardrobe in Leeds. My brother took me, because there was a scout there from The Voice, and he was like “You should go”. The scout told me to audition, but I never went. I don’t really want to go down that path into the industry. I’d feel like I was selling myself out. I’d rather do it myself. It’s more genuine that way, I feel. Open mics are a good way of getting performance experience and it’s nice to be around people who are like minded. Music can change your life. It’s changing mine. I’m becoming my own person through music.”

I`m obsessed with music. Performing is still totally new to me, but I’ve kind of decided to get involved. I’ve always wanted to be in a band. I’ve been playing guitar for a long time and I thought “I’ve got to do it. I’ve got to stop waiting for a band to happen”. I’ll tell you what is was, actually. I read ‘Clothes, clothes, clothes, music, music, music, boys, boys, boys’ by Viv Albertine . She got into open mics in her fifties and writes about the bravery needed for that. I read it at New Year, so I thought “That’s my New Year’s resolution, if she can do it, I should do it”. Tonight was the first open mic I’ve enjoyed. I get really reluctant. My nerves morph into reluctance. I spend the hours before an open mic faffing around, wishing I didn’t have to. But I’m always glad when I’ve done it, so that’s why have to get through that”
