According to the ASPCA - A factory farm is a large, industrial operation that raises large numbers of animals for food. Over 99% of farm animals in the U.S. are raised in factory farms, which focus on profit and efficiency at the expense of animal welfare. Factory farming is a shameful practice of the present-day meat industry that is taking a larger toll on the state of the world than many people even realize! Factory farms are one of the largest contributors to global warming for a variety of reasons. This industry produces copious amounts of greenhouse gases, from the methane that cows produce to all the transportation required for shipping food and animals great distances. Many rainforests in South America have also been destroyed for the production of soybeans that will be used to feed these animals. These forests are no longer able to absorb the large amounts of CO2 that they otherwise would. This is only the tip of the iceberg. There is also the issue of large amounts of runoff from these factory farms polluting the groundwater of neighboring communities, not to mention the blatant practice of animal cruelty. IT ALL STARTS WITH THE CONSUMER! It's easy to put blame on big corporations that lead the industry, and say that something is wrong and should be changed. However, it is as much each individual's responsibility to be aware and change the way things are done as it is the responsibility of those companies. After all, the demand for meat production originates with the consumer... that's you! Even removing one meal of meat a week can make a drastic change in the long run! It all starts with your next meal. These are a series of posters I've made that tackle the issue of educating the public with cold hard facts, employing animal graphics composed of facts related to the farming of cows, pigs and chickens. These posters are in no way affiliated with PETA. However, I find that their focus on factory farms is admirable, and the subject matter relates to their focus as an organization. If you'd like to learn more, here is a link to a ten minute video that details the practice of different factory farm industries.
