I am an illustrator / designer specializing in technical and scientific illustration in Asheville, NC. I have long been interested in science, the arts, and education, with a keen desire to use visual imagery to explain how things work. My educational background, which includes a Bachelors in Fine Art and Biology, and a Masters in Industrial Design, was guided by those interests. In addition to my decades of experience as a freelance illustrator and industrial designer, I have worked with or for a number of publications, educational institutions, government organizations, software companies and manufacturers. This includes: • National Geographic Magazine science and technology art director. • Production of monthly illustrations for the general aviation advocacy organization, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). Much of what I produce are infographics and diagrams in 3D for their magazines, Flight Training and Pilot, with content also used on their web publications. • 60 vector and 3D illustrations for a book on basic electronics for young adults (published in India 2015). • 160 illustrations for the book How Stuff Works, by Marshall Brain. • Infographics for three instructional manuals for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (Australia). • 20 years experience producing promotional illustrations for BtB, a Raleigh, NC marketing and communications firm specializing in electronics and manufacturing markets. • 20 years working on a freelance basis for Bolt, an industrial design firm in Charlotte, NC. I assisted design teams in concept generation and development, as well as presentations to clients. • Visiting Professor of Industrial Design at North Carolina State University School of Design. • Adjunct professor of Visual Communications for UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Courses taught included basic graphic design, Infographics, publication design (using InDesign), and 3D Modeling for Infographics. A few samples of my work are included for your review.
