uniE613 Interactive Empathy Exhibit: Understanding the Transgender Journey | A Transmedia Plan
Within our EMDD 640 class, we partnered with two professors (Dr. Natalee Seely and Leo Caldwell) to build out a physical and digital space to effectively communicate the issues and narratives of transgender individuals. This proposal will be used in the next submission for the Ball State University Discovery Grant. Below is our overview of the problem statement from our proposal. "As a social construction, the obstacles for the transgender community are a result of social expectations regarding gender identity. Thus, by educating and building understanding for the trans community, the long process of removing these obstacles can begin. As stated previously trans women have experienced greater media attention and acceptance through the 21st century which has translated into better understanding throughout American society. While there are certainly still barriers and targeted attacks towards trans women, this greater acceptance has created a better space to build relationships and understanding for this specific part of the trans community. Trans men and nonbinary people on the other hand have not experienced similar media attention. This lack of media attention, historical documentation, and general representation has created a lack of respect under understanding for trans men and nonbinary individuals and their specific societal problems. "By elevating the voices of trans men and nonbinary people within the Muncie community we would like to contribute to the developing story world of trans liberation and draw attention to underrepresented voices within the trans community."
uniE613 Living to be Newsworthy : BA Senior Thesis
“The artist must have something to say, for mastery over form is not his goal but rather the adapting of form to its inner meaning,” Wassily Kandinsky, Concerning the Spiritual in Art. Since I was a child art has always been beneath my hands. Whether it was chalk on the sidewalk or learning watercolor alongside my grandmother, art has carried me through this life. It measured my height as I grew, it comforted me when I was sad, it encouraged my mom to beat her illness, and it brought me to college. However, it became a sneaky affair when the world butted in to say time and time again “there is no money in art”. As reality set in, I dove more into my work as a journalist. I declared majors in both subjects but created an internal batt–Journalism forced me to work digitally, while my art degree took me back to charcoal. I could never love them both, and art continued to suffer. It wasn’t until the final year of my studies that it finally hit me: I am allowed to be both an artist and journalist. This series, Living to be Newsworthy, takes my journalistic background and puts it on display. It incorporates birch board panels to make diptychs the size of a standard newspaper. They are stamped with newsprint stories from my home town in their designated categories; then dripped, splattered, sprayed, and poured with ink. The eight stories represent newsworthy events and memories from their sections: breaking news, global affairs, politics, economics, health, lifestyle, education, and technology. Within their ink blots, a story takes place forcing the viewer to reflect on their role in the news from the past twenty two years (my age). To push the narrative further, the artworks are paired with an immersive display. In the glass case beside the works lies a time capsule to the spark of journalism's new era: 2001. The case holds technology and tools used by journalists during that year, and shows the viewers not only life twenty two years ago, but the future as well–with interactive elements like videos, a timelapse of myself working on the artworks, and the new tools like ChatGPT. The work is meant to transport viewers back and forth between time periods, but never force an idea on the viewer. It is merely a reflection of our news cycle and everyone's role within it. “Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph, and the signs of horror are still in the air,” Henry Anatole Grunwald, Australian journalist and former managing editor of TIME magazine.
