The City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Master Plan team, led by Brandstetter Carroll, assessed existing parks and recreation facilities and programs. Following data collection and stakeholder meetings development goals and strategies were outlined in a comprehensive document. Traditional public meetings don’t often draw a diverse crowd in Charleston. Because of this, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the nationwide racial injustice protests, the team decided to conduct community outreach by going to the parks to engage with a diverse collection of citizens. At each of the facilities the team surveyed individual park users and collected quantitative and qualitative data. Following the park visits, the data was organized and analyzed to generate meaningful recommendations of the future of the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Charleston.
