willchdesign.myportfolio.com Hello! Design has always been a passion of mine, having gone from playing with Lego as a kid to working as a lead designer on internationally renowned projects. I have always had an enthusiastic approach to design challenges, overcoming them with creative, novel solutions and outside-of-the-box thinking. Design is an incredibly broad subject and I’ve been fortunate to work on a great range of projects over the last several years, from designing shop front facades for manufacture to creating child friendly graphics for web and phone apps. My experiences have allowed me to excel as a multi-disciplined designer, utilising a versatile toolbox of product, graphic and branding design skills to confidently approach any design challenge which comes my way.

    uniE621 Little Journey: Graphic Design
Little Journey is a healthcare tech start-up, providing an app for children going to hospital appointments. The app uses friendly language and approachable characters, helping to reduce anxiety and stress by delivering helpful, necessary information, curated by the hospital staff, and through VR technology which shows the user exactly which hospital rooms they will visit. The use of graphics has been an important aspect of Little Journey’s branding, with two distinct styles being used. Child facing graphics have been designed to be fun and engaging, using bold colours and geometric shapes to create recognisable and approachable characters and artwork. For corporate marketing materials and infographics, a more adult style has been used, with a muted colour scheme using the brand colours. There have been several graphics projects I’ve worked on at Little Journey, including creating a range of achievement icons for their app gamification, various posters and marketing materials and creating new graphic artwork for their website. uniE621 Little Journey: Branding Design
It's been key to ensure that Little Journey can appear both friendly and playful in some situations while being professional facing in others. Working with the Little Journey team, we have created a brand which can provide games and fun information packets to children and families while also catering to hospitals and research organisations as a professional healthcare brand. Many important factors have come together to create the Little Journey brand, from the way shapes and colours are used, to the use of language, character design and a distinct, recognisable logo. Little Journey provides a product in two parts; an app for children and families, and an online portal for hospital staff to customise the app content for their patients. To approach the challenge of designing both sides of this product, certain aspects carry across, such as the use of icons, colours and common assets (buttons, dropdown menus, etc.) to ensure each side of the product is distinct and suitable for their users while also being recognisably part of the same product and brand Click here for more info: willchdesign.myportfolio.com/little-journey-uiux-design #Branding #BrandingDesign #UIDesign #UXDesign #WebDesign #AppDesign #GraphicDesign
    uniE621 MiniBrum
Part of the Thinktank museum in Birmingham, MiniBrum is a gallery for children to explore, styled as a toy box version of the city of Birmingham with recognisable landmarks such as The Selfridges Building and Old Joe the clocktower from Birmingham University. The gallery has many different interactive elements with a focus on accessibility and STEM learning. I was involved with several different exhibits in this gallery including the Seasonal Trees park area, Canal Boat Living, The Construction Area Dressing Up Hut and The Selfridges Building inspired Beauty Salon. The challenges on this project varied from concept designing exhibits to be fun and engaging for a younger audience (including integration of interactive elements) as well as joinery construction design and ensuring ease of assembly on site. MiniBrum has been met with vast praise, being commended for its engaging content and novel take on the city of Birmingham. uniE621 London Transport Museum: Future Engineers
The Future Engineers gallery at The London Transport Museum aims to inspire younger generations by showcasing different STEM subjects within the transport sector. Visitors get to envision themselves within various engineering roles, such as looking at future technology for the London underground, mapping out transport as a city planner and becoming a train driver in a realistic simulator. Working in collaboration with The London Transport Museum and Bombardier, I was tasked with designing the train driver interactive. The brief involving designing a train cabin that resembled the interior of a new Bombardier train while being intuitive and easy to use for the simulation program. Along with these aesthetical challenges, there was also the task of making it suitable for manufacture and assembly and using anthropomorphic data and ergonomics for general use, comfort and wheelchair access. Inspiring STEM subjects through engaging interactives has made the Future Engineers gallery a well received addition to the museum. uniE621 Kidzania Abu Dhabi
Kidzania is a child-friendly, indoor city, filled with a vast range of immersive activities. Visitors have the opportunity to experience adult life through a range of jobs within their own respective buildings. From firefighter to banker, barrista or undercover spy, kids learn about different exciting career opportunities through fun and skill building activities which give an insight into the adult world. The design team on this job was tasked with developing the outer shop-front façades for each of the buildings. The client was eager to give each building its own identity, so it was important to incorporate a range of materials, finishes and graphics to compliment the design of each façade, giving them an individual personality. My own involvement in the project included working on The Independence Fountain, The Bank Vault, The Expo Stadium, Fire Escapes and various other items such as the traffic lights and large trees. Kidzania Abu Dhabi has been another success for the international franchise, gaining attention for its unique approach to learning and play. uniE621 Dig It!
‘Dig It!’ is a play attraction themed as an interactive construction site with many hands on activities, creating a fun and immersive play experience. With the option of getting kitted out in a high-vis jacket and helmet, kids have the opportunity to learn and play through activities involving digging, building and creating in a safe and fun environment. Being an in-house project, the design team working on Dig It was tasked with creating concept designs for a range of construction themed interactive attractions that would fill a product catalogue. This gave clients the flexibility to choose which attractions they wanted for their own Dig It venue, while saving on design time from having to redesign similar, bespoke products for each site. The project had a very successful opening in Dubai, being commended with “The Timeout UAE Kids Awards” for being the best kids’ edutainment centre. This success was continued with the further opening in Russia, with more sites planned across the world. uniE621 Hull Blast
This project undertook turning a warehouse in Hull into an exciting arena for Yorkshire’s first toy dart-gun arena. I primarily worked on the futuristic space zone, themed as a battle on a distant moon. The various themed obstacles were used as cover to duck behind and shoot over with toy guns. One of the main challenges from this project was to design themed obstacles from concept to manufacture, making deliverables that were both suitable to the theme of the area while being achievable for production. For example, the ‘Spider Walker’ obstacle in the space area was designed in parts to be separated for ease of manufacture and assembly on site. Many of the parts in the space area were also painted with UV reflective paints to give them a futuristic glowing effect when under a UV light.
