uniE608 Gemo TV Commercial featuring Gong Li (China)
Commercial for GEMO featuring Gong Li. We shot this just outside Paris using 2 Red Monstros, a Red Komodo (on a gimbal) and Cooke Panchro/i Classic FF lenses. I love the Large Format look so chose to shoot this commercial using Red Monstros and as we have limited time with Gong Li, went with a 2 camera shoot. Moreover with the large VV sensor I can get a much shallower depth of field as that was the look that the director and I wanted for the Medium and Close Up shots. The Red Komodo was only for select gimbal shots. I chose Cooke Panchro/i Classic FF for the lovely focus fall-off, creamy bokeh and lovely skin tones with a slightly warm colour rendition. I’ve always been a big fan of the Cooke Look. We had very limited time to shoot as we only had 2 days to shoot this commercial and we had to share Gong Li’s time with the still photography team that was shooting the scenes right after us. Moreover, I also had to share some of my large light fixtures with them so I could not re-light for the next scene/set-up while the stills team were shooting. Overall, I am pretty pleased with the project however, the director and I wanted a more contrasty and shadowed look, which is how I lit the commercial. Alas, that’s the world of commercials where clients and agency (especially in Asia/China) always want to see their celebrity’s face fully lit so some shots were heavily lifted in the grade making Gong Li look a little flat in several shots. uniE608 VP Bank “Diamond” TV Commercial (Vietnam)
This is a commercial for VP Bank in Vietnam. VP bank wanted to feature their real clients and this lady is a well reputed designer in Vietnam. We shot this in a location that art department flipped to resemble the store owner's shop in Hanoi. For expediency, we shot this on 2 cameras, a RED Weapon Helium on a slider and a RED Epic-W on a Ronin 2. We used Zeiss superspeeds MKIII as the director and I like the organic, and slightly vintage look the lenses produced in addition to the slight softness that takes the edge off high-resoultion digital sensors. uniE608 Hotlink “Fast” TV Commercial (Malaysia)
Hotlink commercial that had minimal prep time, multiple locations, with lots of additional insert shots per location. Going for a "edgy" feel to appeal to millenials. It was a crazy, fun shoot. Shot entirely in Kuala Lumpur on a Red Epic Dragon with Cooke MiniS4/i lenses. For the final shot we used an Inspire 1 UAV. uniE608 Coca- Cola “One Bottle For All” TV Commercial (Malaysia)
Coke commercial I shot in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for regional distribution (10 countries). We had to mount the camera on a rig that was custom made to attach to the bottom of the bottle. As the various talent had to handle and manipulate the bottle (while wake-boarding, rock-climbing, para-motoring, etc.), we had to use a camera that was light enough, has an underwater housing and still shoots decent HD. We initially considered using a Canon 7D but due to the weight factor, that idea was scrapped early in pre-production. We also tested the GoPro HD and ContourHD but the results were not good enough for broadcast. I suggested we use the Olympus Pen E-PL1 due to its small form-factor and decent image quality, After some testing, we decided that it produced good enough results for the commercial.
