Position Overview
The History of Black Writing (HBW), a research unit in the English Department at the University of Kansas, is seeking a Communications Assistant to support project activities. The Communications Assistant will join a team of students in bolstering HBW’s online, campus, and national/worldwide visibility through its social media strategy, websites, webinars, events, fundraising and other public outreach. This is a great public-facing position with real world experience if you are interested in one or more of the following: writing, research, social media, communications, journalism, media, graphic design, popular culture, outreach, analytics, website design, audio/video production and/or fundraising.
This is a 5-20 hour per week position on the Lawrence campus.
Job Description
95% Work as part of a team to: organize and implement social media posting schedule; research, write, edit and incorporate graphic design elements into social media content and post to various platforms; brainstorm and generate new content ideas.
5% Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Federal Work Study eligible
- College Undergraduate or above
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
- Library research skills as indicated in application material or from previous work experience
- Strong attention to detail as indicated from application materials
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students (Exceptions granted for GTA/GRA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

- GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher
- Willingness to work in a professional environment
- Ability to work independently and in group settings
- Good communication skills
- Interest in African American and Ethnic literature
