Location: London, UK

Contract: Part Time

About the Role

We’re looking for a part-time Section Editor (news and features) for maternity cover. The role is for three days a week, covering a nine-month maternity leave starting in late September. You’ll have direct responsibility for news and features sections of the magazine and report directly to the editor. You will be up to date with the news (UK and foreign), and during your three days per week (Mon-Wed), you’ll work with the team to produce multiple pages quickly and accurately.

What You’ll be Doing

Along with the rest of the team, as Section Editor you’ll be expected to identify and pitch stories that will appeal to our readers and, together with the editor and other section heads, you’ll decide the story line-up every week. You’ll oversee the writers as they produce copy and liaise with the picture editors and designers to decide the look of pages, including selecting the visuals that will support the storytelling. You’ll edit on layout, ensuring that all copy adheres to The Week Junior’s high standards of clarity, accuracy, style, and voice, and will work closely with the production team and the editor to ensure that every page is on target for our readers and delivered on time. You may also be expected to contribute to the podcast and other brand extensions.

Experience that will Put You Ahead of the Curve

  • Proven record as a section editor of a print publication
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team in a fast-paced environment – a newspaper or weekly news magazine background would be ideal
  • Keen interest in current affairs
  • Demonstrable understanding of children’s interests and abilities
  • Expertise in simplifying complex subjects for a non-expert audience
  • Proven track record in planning, commissioning, and writing
  • Ability to make decisions, communicate clearly, and prioritize under pressure
  • Experience using InDesign is essential and familiarity with Google Workspace an advantage
  • Podcast experience would be a plus
