Position Summary

This position is a part-time, temporary position.

A successful Video Editor will be a creative individual with strong storytelling skills and a background that includes media, art, communication, and videography. An ideal Video Editor uses a combination of these skills in order to understand all elements of producing a finished quality film or video. As a Film and Video Editor, applicants should be able to bring sight and sound together in order to tell a cohesive story.

The video editor position is part of the IRIS Center, a federally funded project located within the Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University. The IRIS Center is an international leader in the development of free, open-access resources used for training and ongoing professional development of current and future teachers and other education professionals. Applicants must possess high level abilities for video editing and audio editing that will be used to make instructional videos. This position reports directly to the administrative manager.

This position can be performed primarily via an alternative work arrangement (i.e., remote work) during business hours.

Applicants are encouraged to share a link to their online portfolio, if available. The hiring process will involve a video editing assignment.

Required Equipment and Software:

Applicants are required to provide their own Adobe CC 2022 Suite containing the most recent version of Premiere, After Effects, Audition, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. A Mac computer is preferred but not required.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

Audio/Video

  • Edit video using Adobe Premiere, After Effects
  • Edit audio (narration, dialog and music) using Adobe Audition
  • Follow a script or outline
  • Manipulate and edit film pieces in a way that is invisible to the audience
  • Trim footage segments and put together the sequence of the video
  • Input music, dialogues, graphics and effects
  • Ensure logical sequencing and smooth running
  • Improve and correct lighting, coloring and faulty footage
  • Work closely with directors to present a final product
  • Create rough and final cuts

Education and Certifications:

Working toward or completion of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Graphic Design/similar field OR at least 5 years of relevant experience.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Very strong skills in Adobe Premiere and After Effects
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrable video and audio editing ability with a strong portfolio

Preferred Experience and Skills:

In addition to those listed under “Required Experience and Skills,” preference will be given to candidates who also possess the following:

Skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign

In addition, candidates should possess the following characteristics:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and complete within deadlines
  • Ability to ask insightful questions to ensure content accuracy
  • Ability to give and take constructive feedback in a positive, professional manner and perform multiple revisions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact fluidly with the diverse individuals and organizations connected with the center
  • Ability to adjust flexibly to changes in priorities and deadlines
