Job Summary:

The Technical Designer is an all-around designer who is responsible for leading the design and creation of a variety of 2D and 3D projects. Technical designers are part programmer and part designer and are responsible for actually implementing the majority of the gameplay in projects. They are the middleman between the programming and design departments. Duties can include writing system specification documents, designing systems, writing scripts, mocking up user interfaces, menus, and gameplay examples. Technical Designers can also implement level designs derived from instructional training lessons that depict scenarios and interactive events required for qualification and certification training. This position typically works under general supervision and direction. Incumbents of this position will exercise some decision-making authority.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, design, document, implement, maintain, adapt and modify source code, assets, and game engine scripts for a variety of 2D and 3D projects
  • Ensure a cohesive design between user interaction, game mechanics, and application goals
  • Work with content developers to ensure proper implementation according to system specifications
  • Revise and update assets for functional efficiency and optimization to create a high fidelity interactive environment
  • Create and revise scenario sequences related to simulation training lessons within design specifications
  • Analyze functional/performance specifications for products
  • Participate in the development of software requirements
  • Participate in relevant aspects of application design with engineers and program management
  • Coordinate with team engineers to ensure proper implementation of programs according to system specific specifications
  • Create and manage game content within budget and achieve performance requirements
  • Ensure configuration management is maintained for all content developer team work products
  • Participate in the review of work products for correctness, adherence to the design concept and to user standards, and for progress in accordance with schedules
  • Work with Quality Assurance to maintain standards and resolve issues that arise
  • Identify and resolve technical issues during development
  • Participate in general content integration and work with other developers to optimize integration processes
  • Respond to and resolve technical issues during development and participate in content integration efforts
  • Work within deadline and budgetary constraints
  • Incorporate new technologies into products and development pipelines as directed

Required Skills / Qualifications:

  • A college diploma in Game Design, Project Management, or equivalent (undergraduate degree an asset)
  • 1+ shipped/live titles in a Technical Designer role
  • Experience with visual scripting (ex: Unreal Blueprints), text-base is also valid
  • Solid game design knowledge, and a willingness to contribute to feature design in addition to implementation
  • Passion for fostering an inclusive and diverse “team-first” culture based on fun
