What Your Job Will Be Like

The Accident Consequence Modeling and Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Full Stack Software Developer (Job Title: R&D, S&E Computer Scientist) to lead the development of software used by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to perform safety analyses for Nuclear Power Plant licensing and safety assessment. Other relevant projects include developing software for the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Defense (DoD), and related software lead activities. In this position, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that supports high visibility programs, including achieving launch approval for public and commercial space missions that use either nuclear propulsion or radiological power sources.

The primary responsibility of this role would be working with the program manager and peer lead developers to develop and carry out project plans, establish software development processes and team procedures, support software verification and validation procedures and lead a team of developers in code development. This challenging and dynamic environment will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to leverage the unique expertise of a national laboratory to solve complex problems.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Provide technical leadership to our team of software developers
  • Refine software team procedures and provide reporting artifacts
  • Develop and test code to meet customer needs and requirements
  • Participate in daily agile stand-up meeting and scrum reviews
  • Join program manager in project meetings with the end customer
  • Work with subject matter experts to understand project needs and requirements and determine the most appropriate technology stack to solve project expectations

Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must work onsite at the Sandia Albuquerque site at least 50% of the time.

Salary Range

$101,400 - $201,400

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field, plus 8 years of directly relevant experience, or a graduate degree and 4 years of relevant experience
  • Experience leading a team of software developers
  • Experience architecting software
  • Experience managing projects
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level Security Clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Working knowledge of the C++, C#, and the Fortran computer languages
  • Experience with React, Java, and Node.js
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment
  • Experience with the Linux operating system and developing and scripting software on it
  • Strong mentorship skills and proven ability to work with and mentor junior and new programmers
  • Proven ability to dig through legacy application software, determine what its doing, and migrate the capability to a state of practice / modern application framework
  • Project management certifications such as the PMP
  • Experience working with code repositories, such as Gitlab and bug tracking systems, such as Fogbugz

About Our Team

The Accident Consequence Modeling and Analysis Department (ACMAD) supports the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Department of Energy (DOE) by providing experts in the Modeling of the Atmospheric Transport, Environmental, and Economic impact of released Nuclear Material as well as expertise in severe accident phenomenology; for both Emergency Response, Emergency Preparedness, Licensing applications, and basic scientific research. This team consists of high performing multi-disciplined scientists and engineers that work in a collaborative environment to develop state of art computer codes and analyses of severe accidents in nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities and the environmental transport of radiological releases, as well as the health and economic consequences of such releases. The team interacts broadly with both our domestic Federal customers as well as domestic and international customers, stake holders and customers with the goal of making nuclear power as safe as possible in a complex world faced with existential threats from climate change, terrorist threats and natural disasters.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia’s discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
