Job Summary:
As a Sound Designer at The Athenaeum Center for Thought and Culture, you will be responsible for crafting the auditory elements that bring our theatrical productions to life. Your role involves planning and providing sound effects, music, and the overall soundscape for our plays, ensuring that the auditory experience enhances the storytelling and emotional impact of each performance. Collaboration with the director, design team, and sound technicians is integral to achieving a seamless and immersive sound design.

Production Dates:
- Production Meetings: currently underway (once a week 8am-9am)
- First Rehearsal: October 16th
- Load-In: November 6th
- Performances: November 10-19th
Key Responsibilities:
- Thoroughly study the script to identify all sound and music requirements, including sound effects, pre-existing music, and original compositions.
- Collaborate closely with the director and the design team to understand the production concept and vision, discussing the role of sound and music in conveying the desired atmosphere.
- Assist in the development of sound effects and music by attending rehearsals to ensure synchronization with the on-stage action and emotional tone.
- Create and compose original music when required, aligning it with the production’s thematic elements and narrative.
- Gather, record, and source the necessary sounds, whether lifelike noises, abstract soundscapes, or music tracks from existing sources.
- Use sound and music to motivate actions on stage, establish time, season, location, mood, and transitions between scenes.
- Collaborate with the director, cast, and crew during technical rehearsals to fine-tune the timing and execution of sound and music cues.
- Utilize technology and sound equipment effectively, staying up-to-date with advancements in sound design technology.
- Prepare and maintain essential planning tools, including a sound plot, system layout, and cue sheet, to guide sound technicians during performances.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Sound Designer in theatrical or performance arts productions.
- Proficiency in sound design software and equipment.
- Strong musical and compositional skills, with the ability to create original music that enhances the production’s narrative.
- In-depth knowledge of sound design principles, technology, and equipment.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with directors, fellow designers, and production teams.
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Adaptability to accommodate changes and adjustments during the production process.
- A passion for storytelling through sound and a deep appreciation for the performing arts.
